Strategic Plan
Gladwin County Animal Shelter Advisory Board Members and Staff, along with strategic leadership support from Mid Michigan College, developed this plan in early 2020, and continue to work toward achieving these goals.
Goal #1 Develop Alternative Revenue Sources
Contact local individuals skilled in grant writing and secure their assistance in obtaining grants for the Shelter.
Develop a Maintenance Fund within the Gladwin County Community Foundation.
Engage local fundraising leaders to assist with Shelter fundraising efforts.
Plan and launch a signature annual fundraising event.
Develop a communication and technology plan to support fundraising efforts.
Develop naming and sponsorship opportunities for donors.
Develop annual giving campaigns.
Promote Amazon Wish List.
Improve partnerships to enhance fundraising efforts.
Goal #2 Develop Support Network
Build relationships with local veterinarians.
Build relationships with local Prosecutors, Judges, Magistrates, Law Enforcement, and State Representatives.
Develop talking points and brochure to be used when connecting with potential partners.
Develop a robust volunteer program.
Goal #3 Facility Improvements
Complete a comprehensive needs assessment for the shelter and the community, based on data to determine facility and service needs.
Visit other shelters to determine best practices and preferred construction methods and materials.
Consult an experienced construction partner to avoid pitfalls and ensure we are using public funds responsibly.
Design a new facility with the selected construction partner. Ensure all ideas are heard, acknowledged, and considered in light of the needs assessment.
Obtain a rendering, architectural drawings, and floor plan to assist in fundraising efforts.
Determine the final site location.
Launch and complete the build of new facility.
Goal #4 Increase Awareness & Improve Reputation
Send monthly press releases to the Gladwin County Record & Clarion.
Develop a social media content library for Shelter Staff to utilize.
Present at local community meetings including service organizations, townships, etc. on an annual basis.
Develop and implement educational experiences for local school children and community members on responsible pet ownership and animal care.
Reinstate the Friends of the Gladwin Shelter Facebook Page.
Hold a logo design contest and select a professional logo for the Shelter.
Goal #5 Animal Wellbeing
Develop expanded spay/neuter program, vaccination clinics, etc.
Develop database of community members who can help house animals and provide essential supplies in times of great need.
Goal #6 Organizational Strength
Write a staffing request to the County for the next budget cycle for a part-time employee to serve as a volunteer coordinator.
Develop, launch, and maintain Shelter website.
Develop web content to increase transparency related to shelter operations, outcomes, services, finances, and community impact.
Ensure technology is in place to improve effectiveness related to animal care, animal control concerns, adoptions, fundraising, etc.
